View Full Version : Lice at School

This summer half the neighborhood had lice. I checked my girls heads every single day. One day, I found 5 eggs in Tabitha's head. We used the Lice Free products I got at Walgreens and we had no issues after that. I just knew that once Victoria got to school I was going to hear about more lice. Sure enough. Got the phone call from the teacher today that NINE kids in her kindergarten room have lice and were sent home today. Victoria is mostly in her special ed classroom, but she does go in there for 30 min a day and also attends what they call the Encore classes which are music, art, gym, etc. I'm going to start using the Lice Free shampoo on her every day for a few weeks. I did that the first week of school and quit because it was drying her hair out. Her hair is REALLY dry anyway. One of my favorite soap makers is making some Tea Tree Oil Shampoo bars for me but they are still curing. What do you ladies do to keep your kids lice free during school?

Fairy Tales shampoo and spray. I got it on Amazon. My niece had lice several times last year. DD got it, we shaved her head (had to, she wouldn't sit still for the comb)
I used Fairy Tales after that, she never got it again, even when my niece did. And they had contact every day. I finally bought some for my niece too. No problems since.

I use the FAiry Tales lice deterrent spray on Ethan's hair before school. It makes him smell like a citronella candle LOL but my hairdresser says they swear by the stuff. they also make a shampoo and conditioner

oh duh DAnielle mentioned the shampoo too LOL. I'll probably get the shampoo as well when I need more shampoo.

I spray their hair with water that I have added TTO to. I may get some citronella EO to add also. Lice scares the crap out of me. None have had it yet.

Lice scares the crap out of me too. Angi and I had it really bad when she was about 4 years old. She had thick, waist length hair. My hair was mid back. It sucked. It took us months to totally get rid of it. I was constantly washing stuff and picking nastiness out of our heads. I don't ever want to go through that again. When I found those few eggs in Tabitha's hair I nearly lost it. If Victoria gets it i can't even imagine what we'll do. There is no way she'll sit still long enough for me to pick a bunch of eggs off her hair. The worst part, is that her favorite sensory thing to do is lay down and the right side of her head on the floor, beanbag, pillow, whatever is on the floor. I've never heard of that Fairy Tales stuff. I'll check that out. The Lice Free shampoo makes her smell like TTO and it's really strong. Plus it dries her hair out.

If we have lice issues, I use Lice Help. (http://www.licehelp.com/)
It's safe, it works and there is absolutely NO combing involved. TTO is actually not supposed to be used on children and pregnant women and I haven't found that it does anything to get rid of lice. In fact, nothing worked but the Lice Help stuff when we had a months-long battle with lice.

I was always told(by the school nurse an other believable people) that black people couldn't get life bc of the hair texture/shape or something. I just assumed my boys would have the same protection since they don't have "white people" hair

I add a few drops of TTO to our shampoos and we've luckily had no issues

Hmm, interesting. I asked DH if he's ever heard of that and he said he hadn't. He has never had lice but, then again, neither have I. I think my kids' hair is more "white" feeling than black. That's sounds weird. :giggle:

I'm OK with putting the drop of TTO that's been diluted in about 8oz of water, on my kid's heads to avoid getting lice. I fear the endocrine disrupters in the pesticide shampoos more than I do TTO. Although, if my kids do ever get the nasty buggers, I'll check out that Lice Help stuff.

I agree with Messy Mama - I also spray my DD's hair with water with some TTO in it. It's so diluted, I can't see the issue. Also, I'm more afraid of the pesticides and all that than TTO. We've had a few cases of lice at her daycare, and nether of us has gotten it, I'm sure because I make sure we spray before we leave and when we get home. (Knock on wood)

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I learned that the hard way. We ended up finally using the prescription stuff to get rid of it. Now we use the Lice Away TTO prevention spray and haven't had a problem since.
