Will I take my daughter to her pediatrician. I am looking for a new one starting today.

I took my daughter to her pedi because she got hit in the eye with a magnet and two beer bottle caps (my daughter made this clear to me) Her eye is swollen and red, and very watery.
The doctor comes in the room finally, about about an hour. Asks what happened, then proceeds to my daughter and tries to pry her eye open. My little girl squeals and jumps away. I try to soothe her and calm her and ask her if she can try to open her eye so the doctor can look. She said she’ll try. While waiting for my daughter to work her eye open, the doctor again grabs her eye and tries to pry it open. My daughter’s reaction is to flail and kick because it fucking hurts. The doctor got PISSED AT MY DAUGHTER and yelled at her telling her “YOU DON’T KICK ME!” Looks at me and says, “I can’t do anything here, she won’t let me look. You’ll have to go to the ER.” and walks out.
I’m sitting there stunned for a minute trying to comfort my girl who’s sobbing uncontrollably now. I finally get my kids and walk out of the room, ask the nurse if we are good to go or what. The nurse asks the doctor who instructs us to get this cream filled and if her eye isn’t better tomorrow, she wants to PUT MY DAUGHTER UNDER GENERAL in order to see her eye better!
I finally get the cream she called in after 3 hours. It’s just antibiotic cream. WTF? My daughter doesn’t have an infection. She needs some kind of pain relief! And of course, needed to have her eye actually LOOKED at.

I ended up taking her to the ER last night, where they were much calmer and patient and diagnosed her with a Corneal Abrasion. It's alot better today, still red and watery and she said it's a little blurry to see out of. But she can at least open it halfway.

My DS(6) got antibiotic eye cream after my DD(4) clawed his eye really good. It wasnt because he had an infection, but to prevent one.
I'm sorry that you had a bad experience. I'd be pissed if a doctor yelled at my kid. As for prying the eye open, I dont see much other option if it's swollen shut and they need to look at it to make sure it's ok.

Yeah, but if you work with kids, you need to be patient. Especially with child patients. I absolutely expect my kid's doctor to not lose her patience with my kid. I absolutely expect my kid's doctor not to yell at my child. Kicking and screaming is unfortunately part of the job description of any ped. It's not exactly a glamorous job, medicine, since it deals extensively with all the bodily fluids and people in pain. And yeah, I'd expect my doctor to try more than twice to look at my kid.

The prying of the eye open, that's not unexpected, though. It needed to be looked at. The dr. could have been more patient, yes, but in the end it may have needed to be pried open even if your kid was trying to be compliant. My son needed stitches and golly gee he didn't hold still to allow them to put them in. No, he kicked and screamed. And they just got a papoose board and got him immobile. It wasn't pleasant, he didn't like it, but it needed doing. However, the medical personnel we had were patient and understanding. They took their time, told us what to expect, what they were doing, and why. A little patience goes a long way.

Oh, and I suggest you call your doctor's office and report his/her actions to the office manager. That was not appropriate and needs to be reported.

sounds like this doc needs to not work with kids anymore.

It's hard not to get pissed when a some one kicks you but bad on the dr. for putting themselves in a place to get kicked though. I don't think she should have yelled at your girl, but I don't see anything wrong with a stern "We don't kick."

We actually JUST went through this today too. The Dr. had to examine Buggy's eye. We had to lay him on the table while I leaned on his legs and held his arms while the doc fought his head and tried to pry his eye open to look in it. It was traumatizing to all of us.

Sorry you had a bad experience. The cream is most likely to prevent infection.

I would take her to get looked at by someone else if her eye is really bugging her that much. I don't mess around with eyes, soemthing could still be stuck in it.

Mainly though I would be really pissed about my kid getting a beer bottle cap in the eye. How the hell does that happen?

I ended up taking her in to an eye doctor on Tuesday as well. Apparantly, it's actually Irisitis and not a Corneal Abrasion. She has some hopefully temporary vision loss and was started on steriod eye drops which immediately helped. Her eye is still a little pink and she has to wear sunglasses anytime she's outside. She has another appt on Tuesday to check if her vision is returning to normal in that eye.

Glad you made that follow up appointment. I hope the drops work and her vision comes back.
I'd fire the pediatrician too. Holding a child down might be part of the job sometimes, but being disrespectful towards my kid is not. Kids are people too. They are people still learning about the world and controlling emotions. They are people that require extra patience and compassion when dealing with them.

Oh and this is coming from someone who has had to hold a child down before for a procedure to be done. Everyone involved was helpful, compassionate and kind to my DD before, during and after. It is necessary sometimes, but it can be done in the least upsetting way possible.

Yes this! At the eye doctor, it took 3 of us to hold her down to get the eye drops in for the dialation, and the numbing, and then the steriod. But no one yelled at her, no one lost their patience. And although she was upset about the eye drops and being held down, everyone said what a good job she did and she got over it quickly.

I'd find a new one too! I try not to yell at dd and I don't want other people doing it either.

I'm glad you were able to get her checked by someone else. I hope she heals quickly!

This was at the eye doctor's office, after the dialation and numbing drops. The red part turned almost completely white again after they put the steriod drop in.

Oh yeah wow I'd be PISSED. With children you have to patient otherwise they are just going to not cooperate even more. I've had to hold dd down for IVs and blood work so I know sometimes it's inevitable but yeah it should be on the parent to do that kwim?
