12" Circular needles???? I was so excited to start something worth while but after looking at all the stores in my area nobody has 12" Circs and I also need 16" Circs but only one store has those and it's the wrong needle size. There are no knitting or yarn shops in the area. Where should I go... what brand should I get?

I tried the dpns... it's not happening. :twitch:

I had to order mine online. You can also probably find some at your LYS. I got some online, but they sucked because I ordered Balene. Balene isn't worth a tinker's damn. Get Addis, Addi Turbos, or Susan Bates Silvalume. I don't like the Boye at all, and be careful about getting the ones that are interchangeable because you wind up having to keep screwing the needles back onto the cable the entire time you are knitting. That can be very annoying. LOL

The new ones SUCK. The tips of mine literally BENT and broke within the first 5 sts. I couldn't knit at all. I'm so pissy.

I had the same problem trying to find 16" circs...none of the craft stores around here had them, or even my local knitting shop. I had to get them from knit picks.

I have the knitpicks interchangables, and they don't offer any cables smaller than 24", which totally annoys me. And like Celeste said, it can get very annoying when they start to undo part wasy through (and seriously? the Harmony needles are SO SHARP, and I get new blisters on my finger every time I use them. Ouches!).

You could always use a longer cable size (32"-40") and magic loop - it's a lot less of a learning curve than DPNs. Personally, I like not having to slide stitches around as much as I work - I can cram a ton of stitches right on the needle when I slide around to the new set of working stitches, and it's less work to move them up to knit them then (yeah, sheer laziness in action).

I have Surina (I think that's the name) 12 inch circs and they are awesome. I got them from another mama though. I love Balene 11" circs! I got the only 2 my lys had in size 6 and 7 and they were only $4 each!

I am going to have to learn this magic loop business. Does it prevent laddering? I get that a lot with my DPN's.

I've never tried DPNs because I looked at both and determined that magic loop was less likely to get destroyed by my 3yo, but I have heard that laddering is better with it. Some of my things that I've knit magic loop I can barely see where the breaks are between sets of stitches, some I can't tell at all. None of them are bad, though.

I have had to get all my needles online. I like addi's, and I like my balene needles too. I don't love DPN's at all but if you use them don't get the metal, get bamboo or even plastic is easier to work with. I wanna learn to magic loop now though.

It's easy - I did my first thing on circs with magic loop - a bitty little baby hat. And it was maybe the 3rd thing I'd ever knit.

No one carries them in my town either. Not Hobby Lobby, not Hancock Fabrics, not the LYS in town, not Wal-Mart. I finally found some at the LYS two towns over. They were bamboo, but I can't remember the brand. I wound up losing them somehow but then I got a pair of acrylic Balene's from a mama online. They're alright, but I think I prefer aluminum for knitting in the round.

OMG! I tried Magic Loop tonight, and I won't ever do anything else ever again (except for when I get my sock needles, as I don't think they do circular needles that small)! I love it. I get a tiny bit of laddering, but it's only in 2 spots instead of three, so it's WAY better. :loveshower: :loveshower:

Addi Turbos come in 32 and 40 inch circs all the way down to size 0, and I know that you can do socks on magic loop (although I haven't yet).

Ooh, I'll have to look in to that!

I'm magic looping a hat, and it isn't as easy as it was for the baby mittens. I suppose that the less stitches you have on your loop, the easier it is (ie. 20 stitches vs. 70).

I am magic looping a soaker with 76 stitches cast on. I still prefer it to sliding the stitches around a shorter circ constantly...but then I knit really tightly, so my stitches don't slide very easily on their own. I like being able to cram most of them onto the needle when I switch sets of working stitches.
