At 2pm I'm meeting with the school board for my homeschool review to go over my curriculum and my lesson plans. Ugh. I had one about a month ago, but because I didn't fill it out on "their" calendar form and instead had been tracking our records as we were going along on Word, they rescheduled for me to come back and show them my calendar. It's bad enough lugging in all his books and workbooks along with 4 kids, 3 of which are in strollers, but seriously? lol Oh, and I was just entering our books as we completed reading them (as they do at school) and she said no, I had to enter what pages we read day to day. How do you guys handle these portfolio reviews? I could use some prayers that we don't have to reschedule for another one any time soon after this!

We don't have those here...and by the sound of it, I'm glad. :hugs: mama.

Thanks mama. Supposedly, we are only supposed to have to produce our portfolio to show that we have a curriculum and that they child has to be evaluated once a year to show he is on target for his age. But, throw in the school system and they love to add their own way of reading the statutes. The funniest thing is that the school is who said they didn't think THEY could teach my son, which is why I'm homeschooling. Maybe I should have asked for their portfolio at our last conference to prove what they had been doing day to day with him. lol

:toofunny: I would love to have seen how they responded to that.
and Cass, I'm so glad to hear that it's not like that here. I have dreams of homeschooling mine, and while I want to do everything to stay up on his education, I don't want to have to say which pages we read which day! Texas, from what I hear, is a great state to homeschool in!

Yep it's the best one to homeschool in and I hope it never changes!

Ummmm, I suggest getting in with HSLDA, they will make it so you don't have to do it the school's way. What they are putting you through is crap and is not okay.

I've heard about HSLDA. I just started homeschooling about 3-4 months ago and since we've been trying to figure it out, I wanted to see how we'd manage first. In our state, in the public school, the kids are required to have AR reading time (accelerated reading) to accumulate so many pts each year. All they are required to do is enter the title, date, and author that they finished the book. So, my son and I did that in our reading log. When I brought that in last month, they told me I had to document the daily reading pages we did, not just the title, author, and date we finished the book. Interesting, huh? Double standards for sure!!

you could ask to see an example from a real classroom of what some of these forms "should" look like.
If you give them some notice, and it is actually what is required, then they should be able to show you.
Just saying that if it's true that this is a requirement for hs'ers then they'll have lots of documentary evidence, kwim?
Best of luck with the review. :hugs:

This.
Become very familiar with the law in your state. I've never heard of such a thing in 10 years of homeschooling. I suggest doing nothing more than the law requires, EVER.

So sorry you are having to jump through hoops for the state? CA is nothing like that!

How did it go?

We do not do anything like that either. Are you involved in some program that they help you in some way with one or more of your children? If so that may be why you have all these hoops. I would get hooked up with your local hsing group and really read up on the requirements/laws.
Every year or so I meet a nice woman at the library and show her our marked days, standardized test scores, shot record (if she requests it- usually not) and she marks something in her book.
I hope it all went well for you.

become familiar with your homeschool laws and if you have met the state's requirements then you do not have to oblige the school district. print out and carry a copy of the statute/law that states you only have to do x, y and/or z.
