When you are insuring a package, do you insure it for the amount you sold it? Or do you insure it at the amount it would cost to replace it with a new item?
Thanks

I do do the entire cost though. So including shipping and packing a stuff.

It kind of depends- if it is a box of used diapers that can be easily replaced with other use diapers- the amonut I sold it for. If it was something that was expensive or hard to find used- then I insure it for the cost of it new.

If I'm sending something for a gift or swap, I insure for replacement cost.
For FSOT, I'd insure for whatever I'd have to refund the buyer if something happened to the package.

I usually just insure it for the amount that I would have to refund the buyer. But, now that I think about it, if it were a package that was lost and never surfaced anywhere, I would still be out whatever it was I sent, right? The buyer would get the $$ she sent me, but I'd be out the item? Or am I confused? I can't seem to wrap my head around it...
Sorry to hijack your thread.

Has anyone ever tried to collect USPS insurance on a used item though? I only ask because the only time we actually had to pursue it (a wedding gift that arrived absolutely pulverized) the person who sent it had to show proof of purchase (a receipt) for value. How would you do that on a FSOT type item?

I've only ever insured things that were over say, $50 under that and it's probably not going to be worth the hassle to me.

Technically, you insure for the value of the item, which is what it's worth right now. Like, if your car gets totaled, they won't give you enough money to go out and buy a brand new car. They will give you the value of your car when it was totaled, which is a far sight less than when it was brand new.
I'm pretty sure that you are only supposed to declare the actual value of the item, not the replacement cost.

You'd have to provide a copy of the Paypal receipt, and that's the amount you'd be reimbursed for.
